STUDENTS and teachers from Alexandra Secondary College (ASC) shaved their heads in front of a cheering crowd last Friday to raise over $9000 for the Leukemia Foundation. The event was organised by the Year 11 Leadership Team, with 10 staff members and 10 students volunteering to have their hair shaved for the cause. The original goal was to raise $4000 in the ASC World’s Greatest Shave fundraiser, but instead over $9000 was contributed. Member of the Year 11 Leadership Team, Max Gleeson, said that it was the most money ever raised at the school, and explained that it was in support of those fighting against leukemia. William Goyder, a teacher at the college, worked with the Year 11 leaders to coordinate the event. “I’m so proud of the group,” he said. “This whole thing was student driven, from the marketing to the campaigning, the organising. “It’s been worked on for a while, and it’s a great initiative.” William and Max both had their heads shaved for the fundraiser. “I feel five kilos lighter,” William joked. Some students attended the event in costume, and the whole fundraiser had a party atmosphere to it, encouraging students and staff to get involved with raising money to fight against leukemia. Over 170,000 Australians face the devastating impacts of blood cancer, and 17 lose their life every day. Money raised helps fuel life-changing research projects and support services for both patients and their families.
