HER Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC had a meaningful visit to CFA’s District 22 Headquarters in Shepparton on October 7. The discussion was around the impacts of the January 2026 fires and the ongoing recovery in the impacted areas as we head towards another potentially challenging fire season. CFA Board member Ross Coyle, CFA Deputy Chief Officer North East Region Gavin Thompson and Acting Assistant Chief Fire Officer Peter Bell were among the dignitaries to provide an insight into the Longwood fire which burnt more than 132,000 hectares and destroyed several homes. CFA captains from Longwood, Upton Hill, Creighton’s Creek and Ruffy brigades attended. CFA Deputy Chief Officer North East Region Gavin Thompson said the afternoon was a great opportunity for the captains to tell their personal stories and experiences. “They discussed challenges they faced during the fires and also the days and weeks following the fires," Gavin said. “This included topics such as access to properties, road closures, animal and stock welfare, fencing repairs among other issues. “The captains also discussed the ongoing recovery efforts and how they are preparing for the season ahead. “The Governor General provided heartfelt gratitude towards all our volunteers and recognised their courage, leadership and commitment to protecting their communities.”
