SACRED Heart Primary School Yea celebrated Aboriginal Languages Week during its Wellbeing Day on Friday 23 October, with students enjoying a special opportunity to learn about the culture, language and environment of the Taungurung people, the Traditional Custodians of the land on which the school is located. The school welcomed special guest Nartika Taylor, a Taungurung Ranger, who shared her knowledge of the Taungurung seasons and the native plants and animals found in our local area. Students explored how the changing seasons influence the behaviour of local wildlife and the natural environment. They made connections between their learning and their own observations, noting that long-necked turtles have recently been seen moving around and that more snakes are appearing as the weather warms up. Students also enjoyed learning Taungurung words for local animals and parts of the human body, helping them develop a deeper appreciation of the language and its connection to Country. The day provided a valuable opportunity for students to strengthen their understanding of Aboriginal culture, recognise the importance of caring for our local environment, and appreciate the rich knowledge and traditions of the Taungurung people. Sacred Heart School thanks Nartika for sharing her knowledge, culture and language with students and helping make the day such a meaningful learning experience.
