LAST week the roller coaster at the Melbourne Show was probably very popular but the Marysville golfers had to deal with their own roller coaster concerning the local weather forecast. The outlook for last Thursday and the Ladies Two-Person Ambrose event was in doubt throughout the week with heavy and consistent rain and possible flooding. Members decided not to cancel the day and thankfully none of the 48 players who had entered decided to stay at home. Hitting off at 10am there were a couple of showers during play but conditions were mainly dry, mild and calm. However, torrential rain fell when the visitors were leaving the club and some probably had to avoid large puddles of water across the roads as they drove home. Quote from one visitor, “we dodged a bullet”. This inaugural event was a great success and there were many positive comments from the visiting golfers. Clubs represented were Alexandra, Beaconhills, Broadford, Eastern, Kilmore, Lancefield, Mansfield, Marysville, RACV Healesville, Rossdale, Seymour, Strathbogie, Woodend and Yea. Finishing in first place with a great score and maybe a home team advantage were Gail Leigh and Margaret Blair (12.5) with nett 63.5. The pairs in second to fifth place were awarded prizes and these were second Kilmore, third Mansfield, fourth Alexandra and fifth Mansfield. The nearest the pins were won by Sandra Lording, Mary Campbell and Kerri Nichol. Events such as these take an enormous amount of work both leading up to and on the day. Members thank all those involved in any way with making the day such a success and it is hoped to repeat the format next year. Members thank Bick and the team from the Pavilion Bar and Grill for providing the lunch. The Thursday nine holers played as the ladies cleared the course and they too stayed relatively dry as they played stableford on the front nine holes. Geoff Ferguson was the winner with 20 points followed by Ken Whittingham with 18. Lloyd Flaherty got nearest to the pin on the ninth hole. The forecast for Saturday was again for widespread rain, with possible thunderstorms and flooding but an earthquake early on Saturday morning was not predicted. Despite all the gloom and doom a few golfers did turn up to play stableford. They also managed to complete their round in dry conditions and occasional patches of sunshine. Peter Lilley (16) won the competition with 36 points and the nearest the pins were won by Keith Atwell and Adam Littlejohn who also won the Golden Shot. Next Saturday all golfers will play stroke for the October monthly medal and the first round of the Club Championships. Members are asked to please note that as daylight saving has started tee off on Saturdays will now be 9am for 9.30am. On Thursday three ladies will travel to Euroa to play in the Ladies’ Bowl. The next few weeks will be a busy time at the club with the annual fundraising event on Saturday, November 7, the annual mixed tournament on Sunday, November 8 and hosting of the second round of the Foodworks Murrindindi Masters on December 5. Details of these events can be viewed on the Marysville Golf Club’s website. Members are asked to contribute to these events as requested.
