MERTON Cricket Club start their 2026-27 season this Saturday playing Ovens Valley United at McNamara reserve in Myrtleford. The Merton side is hoping for another strong season after winning the B Grade premiership in the Wangaratta District Cricket Association (WDCA) last season. Last year's A Reserve competition has merged with the B Grade competition this season playing 40 over one day matches in coloured clothing and a four-piece ball. Most matches will be turf wicket games starting at 1pm. Merton have a similar side to last season’s premiership side, however a few injuries and unavailability early on will be a challenge for the Merton boys. A new committee and long-time President Burnie Cummins stepping away from the role is another off-season change at the Merton Cricket Club. All the junior players are recommitted with all standing up in the finals last season. A number of new sponsors are on board this season which is greatly appreciated from all at the cricket club. Hopefully a positive start to the season with a win on Saturday. Any interested, new or retuning players are encouraged to contact the club or head to training on Thursdays from 6pm at the Merton Cricket Ground.
