YEA Golf Club is fortunate to be a strong and dedicated volunteer organisation, with many members generously giving their time and energy to help make the club what it is today. At a club dinner last Friday night, three outstanding members were recognised for their long-standing and valuable contributions, with Russell Wealands, Greg Clements and Vicki Clements each being awarded Life Membership. Plaques were presented to the three recipients on the night in recognition of their commitment and the many ways they have contributed to the success of Yea Golf Club over the years. All three have a long association with the club and, importantly, continue to contribute in many ways. Their efforts, along with those of the many volunteers who keep the club ticking along, are a big part of what makes Yea Golf Club such a great place to belong. There were also a couple of other winners on the night. Di Holdsworth took out the card game, while Christine Simmons was the lucky winner of the raffle meat tray. Clearly, it was a good night to have your name drawn. Last Saturday saw the annual Foursomes Championships held, with 13 teams of two competing across the Men’s and Mixed events. The course is slowly drying out as the spring sunshine finally starts to do its work, although there is still plenty of evidence that winter has overstayed its welcome. Last Friday saw a wonderful team of volunteers out on the course sanding the greens following the recent coring. Their hard work meant the putting was only minorly affected on the day, although there may have been a few players blaming the greens for putts that had nothing whatsoever to do with the coring. In the Mixed Championship, Brian and Christine Simmons combined brilliantly to take out both the Handicap and Scratch events with an excellent 86 off the stick for a nett 66.5. Runners-up in the Handicap were Di Elliott and Peter Johnston with 92 nett 70, while Tony and Nicola Rule finished third with 110 nett 74.5. The Men’s Championship was taken out by the father-and-son combination of Alan and Zach Pell, who claimed both the Handicap and Scratch titles with a very tidy 81 off the stick and nett 67.5. Runners-up in the Handicap were Paul Heyen and Jim Redmond with 92 nett 69, with Gary Pollard and Jonathan Fisher finishing third with 84 nett 70.5. Jonathan Fisher picked up the nearest the pin on the 11th, while Rob Gill and Rob O’Halloran teamed up to take out the Club Award. Congratulations to all winners and placegetters, and the club says a big thank you to the volunteers who put in the hard yards preparing the greens. With the sun now making a welcome appearance, the course is heading in the right direction, and hopefully the golf will follow. Recent winners at Yea Golf Club include Anthony La Grutta who won the 54 Hole Event and Peter Johnston who defeated Luke Gregory in the final of the 2026 Men’s Club Knockout. Last Wednesday saw both Anthony and Peter in form with Anthony winning the Stableford event with 32 points from Paul Heyen on countback with Peter third on 31. Good form for the upcoming Club Championships on October 10, 24 and 31.
