Merton 6/162 defeated by Beechworth Wanderers 9/172. Merton cricketers hosted Beechworth Wanderers at the MCG at the weekend. Both sides have had similar seasons getting close to victory in a number of games this year, but just missing out. Saturdays game was no exception, with the Wanderers just taking the points eight wickets down in the second last over against a depleted Merton side.

Merton batted first making 6/162 lead by Ross MacKinnon with 68; he and son Jai 36 put on a solid partnership to set up Merton’s total, along with young James Benton making 45 not out in a mature batting display.

B Fitzpatrick 2/20 and J Dart 2/14 the best bowlers for the visitors. The Beechworth side started strongly making quick runs early off the Merton openers, as in previous weeks, the combination of Jai Lerch-MacKinnon and Henry Berriman slowed the run rate with Berriman again swinging the game back to an even contest taking 3/29 off eight overs.

Merton struggled to break a few middle order partnerships with top scorers D Poole 34 and G Cull 37 moving the score along. Both sides were always in the game in a tight last 10 overs but the Beechworth boys just did enough to pass Merton’s total in the second last over.

R Berriman 2/19 and single wickets to the Benton brothers, Lerch-MacKinnon and a gutsy effort from Noah Whittall who bowled and fielded with what turned out to be a fractured hand. Losing two in the field in the last eight overs made it tough for the home side, but that’s cricket. Merton travel to Wangaratta next Saturday to take on the Rovers at South Wangaratta.
