PAM Coulson from Alexandra Tyrepower was asked whether their business has seen an increase in the number of vehicles requiring new tyres as a result of pothole damage.
She said, “We would have someone come in probably nearly every day with blown tyres or racked rims.
Huge amount of people… Sometimes even have to get a tow truck to get here because if they’ve blown a tyre or cracked a rim and they haven’t got a spare, they’ve got no other choice but to get a tow truck.
So that’s extra expense for them again.”
Unfortunately, damage to vehicles on Department of Transport managed roads is only covered for expenses past $1640.
The first $1640 of damage is the responsibility of the owner or vehicle insurance (often with an excess which may make a claim unviable). Therefore, drivers often have to absorb the expense themselves.
Pam added, “Sometimes we might even get two [people with pothole-damaged wheels] in the one day. It’s very bad and people are so angry.”
Asked how many people would come in with tyres damaged by potholes five years ago, Pam responded, “Five years ago we probably got none… Or maybe, one or two every now and then, but it’s really bad now.”
