Today, we pause to remember a moment that reshaped our communities and continues to shape how we care for one another.

Seventeen years on from the devastating bushfires of 7 February 2009, communities across Murrindindi Shire continue to honour those affected and the strength, courage and solidarity that followed. In the face of immense hardship, neighbours supported neighbours, families and volunteers stood shoulder to shoulder, and communities began the long work of rebuilding.

The loss and destruction caused by the 2009 fires will never be forgotten and remain one of the darkest chapters in Australia’s bushfire history.

As we reflect today, many in our Shire are also navigating recovery from the January 2026 Longwood bushfire. These experiences remind us that behind every statistic are people, families and livelihoods - and that recovery is not just about rebuilding places, but supporting one another.

The legacy of 2009 is not only one of loss, but of resilience. It reminds us of the power of community, compassion and connection, and of our shared commitment to emerging stronger together.

Today, we honour those who were lost, stand alongside those affected, and reaffirm our commitment to recovery, resilience and community.

💛 Remembering Black Saturday, Saturday 7 February 2009 – 17 Years On

Today marks 17 years since the devastating day that changed so many lives across Victoria. Known forever as Black Saturday, February 7 remains one of the darkest days in Australian history.

We continue to remember:
▪ 173 lives lost
▪ Thousands of families bereaved
▪ Over 400 people injured
▪ More than 2,000 homes destroyed
▪ Countless pets, wildlife, and livestock lost
▪ Over 7,500 people displaced
▪ 430,000+ hectares burnt
▪ 10,000+ km of fencing lost
▪ 109 towns and localities impacted

The real toll - emotional and psychological - can never be fully counted. And while the number 173 is official, the lives lost to injury and trauma in the weeks and years after remind us the impact was far greater.

We honour those who were lost. We stand with those who survived. And we thank those who stepped up to help - emergency services, neighbours, and volunteers who showed remarkable courage.

For many, this anniversary stirs painful memories. If you're one of them, you may find this video comforting and supportive:

Please join us in pausing for a minute of silence at 7pm tonight to reflect and remember.

While we mark what was lost, we also acknowledge the new connections, strength, and community spirit that have grown in the 17 years since.

Legends!Today we want to pause and say the biggest THANK YOU to our incredible volunteers. 🌟

Yea Community House has volunteers here every single day, and the work they do, often quietly and behind the scenes...is what keeps this place running. From group facilitators, to those who clean and restock the Little Food Pantry, water plants, empty bins, lend a hand wherever it’s neede...every role matters. Every person matters.

Recently, we’ve also been blown away by a dedicated team of volunteers who stepped up to help manage the influx of donations in support of our fire-affected communities. The time, care, and compassion you’ve shown has not gone unnoticed. What an absolutely amazing effort. ❤️

To each and every person who volunteers in any way with us here at Yea Community House - thank you. You are the heart of this place, and we are so grateful to have you. 🙏
