📣 Bushfires Inquiry | Supporting community voices

Murrindindi Shire Council has welcomed the Victorian Parliament’s Inquiry into the 2026 summer fires and is formally calling for an extension to the submission deadline to allow meaningful participation from the communities most heavily impacted.

Murrindindi Shire experienced almost half of the total statewide impact from the 2026 summer fires, with 193 homes destroyed and many residents, businesses and community groups still in the early stages of recovery.

While Council supports the Inquiry and the opportunity for lessons to be learned, we recognise that the impacts of the Longwood Fire remain very raw. Many households are still stabilising, people remain displaced, and families, farmers and businesses are focused on immediate needs and rebuilding their lives.

Since 9 January, local communities have led relief efforts, including community-led relief hubs, alongside the ongoing support of volunteers, local CFA brigades and community organisations. Recovery activity is now underway, with a long journey ahead.

Council has requested a two-month extension to 15 May 2026 to ensure submissions from heavily impacted rural communities are informed, considered and truly reflective of the scale and complexity of what has been experienced.

We encourage community members to consider making a submission when they feel ready and able, and to do so in a way that feels right for them. We also acknowledge that revisiting fire experiences can be difficult, and support remains available.
