Thornton/Eildon 2.3-15 drew with Emerald 2.3-15

IN women’s football this week Thornton/Eildon took on Emerald at the Thornton Recreation reserve in Sockit2MND round. Both teams completed vigorous warm-ups in foggy conditions but as the first siren sounded the sun was shining revealing two teams desperate for the win.

Emerald was first to kick a major, but the home team soon responded with a goal of their own through the raking left foot of Jade Mewburn leaving the scores level at quarter time.

The close contest continued throughout the second quarter with Thornton/Eildon dominating the ball movement but strong defence from Emerald denied them any goal scoring opportunities.

Backlines from both teams held strong but Emerald found the goals with a clever snap that allowed them to lead by five points at half time.

The third quarter began in the same fashion as the previous two with the ball rebounding from backline to backline.

Thornton/Eildon began to find more of the ball and seemed to control the quarter, but they again found it difficult to score with Emeralds steely defence holding strong.

The home teams same steely defence lead by Bechet Cousens would also deny the opposition goal scoring opportunities and at three quarter time the scores would have Emerald leading by six points having scored the only score for the quarter.

With a goal the difference Lucy McRae was thrown into the ruck with immediate results taking a strong contested mark and kicking truly leveling the scores.

For the next 10 minutes of the quarter the ball ping ponged again between each team’s defence and then with moments remaining in the game and the ball in….
