FOREST Fire Management Victoria (FFMV) has sent a taskforce of 20 arduous firefighters, supported by an agency representative, to help Canadian firefighting colleagues as they respond to wildfires in the province of Alberta.
The taskforce left Australia on Monday, June 9.
Four FFMVic firefighters from north-east Victoria are part of the deployment. They are Steven Le Brun from Ovens, Sam Schwarz from Broadford, Nicholas Panuccio from Benalla, and Eilis MacInerney-Parkinson from Alexandra.
The Victorian contingent is joining a larger group of 96 firefighters and incident management personnel from Australia deploying to Edmonton, Alberta Province.
The deployment is expected to be up to 36 days comprised of two 14 day rotations.
The fire situation in Canada has become worse over recent weeks, with over 100 fires burning across the country and thousands of people evacuated.
More than 2.6 million hectares of land has been burnt this year.
