SCOTT Whitehead, president of the Alexandra Cricket Club, has been working hard to develop the new season of cricket in Alexandra.
“Obviously there’s a new season of cricket fast approaching, so we’re working hard trying to get all our juniors aligned and everyone signed up before the season starts,” he said.
If young people are keen to give cricket a go, Scott said, “It’s lots of fun and lots of learning. We’re very keen on just educating kids around how the sport works and being a part of the community. That’s what we’re all about.”
He noted that once the Big Bash starts on television, lots of children become keen to take part in the sport, and cricket is certainly a good way of keeping children fit and active during the summer season, as well as teamwork.
Scott said, “It’s all about being part of a team. You see a lot of aspiring leaders come out of it all, and those leaders tend to bring along the kids who are a little bit shy or a little bit cautious of playing the game.
With the different age groups and the senior guys, we’ve got a lot of late teenagers who are very keen to help out with the junior side of development because they recognised how important it was to be part of that team when they were young.”
The participation costs are very reasonable. For under 11s and under 13s, the fee is just $50 for the season, plus the Cricket Australia fee of about $20. Scott commented, “It’s quite affordable but we’re always keen to help families who might not be in a position to provide that assistance for their kids.”
