Murrindindi criminal incidents down 10.2 per cent

VICTORIA’S Crime Data has been released for the past financial year, and it shows that Murrindindi’s overall crime rate is trending downwards. Criminal incidents were down by 10.2 per cent, with 493 recorded this financial year and 549 recorded in the previous year.

The criminal incident rate per 100,000 population was 3141 for Murrindindi, while the Victorian average was 6814. The Melbourne criminal incident rate per 100,000 was 18,097.4.

Of the criminal incidents in Murrindindi Shire, 183 of the incidents occurred in the home, by far the most common location, and 49 were on a street, lane or footpath.

Yea saw the highest number of criminal incidents with 87, ahead of Alexandra on 70, Eildon on 47, Kinglake on 42 and Flowerdale on 24. Although Yea was ahead, it was still down on the previous year which saw 108 offences in Yea and 100 in Alexandra.

The highest principal offence subgroups were other theft on 55, criminal damage 51, breach of family violence order 48, stealing from a motor vehicle 35, and residential non-aggravated burglary 31. There were 20 breaches of family violence order offences in the previous financial year.

In total offences recorded, there was also a decrease for Murrindindi, down 4.8 per cent on the previous year, however the number of alleged offender incidents was up 16.5 per cent. The total victim reports fell by 16.8 per cent compared to the previous year.

Family violence saw an increase of 9.6 per cent, year on year, with Murrindindi Shire close to the Victorian rate per 100,000.
