MERTON cricketer’s travelled to Beechworth for the first game of the 2025-26 Wangaratta District Cricket Association (WDCA) cricket season and returned victors.

Beechworth batting first made 9/114, an excellent result considering they were 5/9 at one point with Merton’s opening bowlers destroying the top order.

Brandon Fitzpatrick steadied things for the home side with 40 along with a few frustrating lower order partnerships, the wanderers finished on 9/114 off 36 overs.

Luke Benton 3/4 and Jai Lerch-Mckinnon 2/16 did the damage early while young spinner Henry Berriman continued his form from last season, taking 4/35 .

Merton opener Luke Berriman set an early tone smashing 24 off the first over, he went on to make 41 off 25 balls including four sixes.

A mini collapse saw the visitors at 4/42, only to recover with some experienced batting from top scorer Jarrod Mahoney with 54 off 50 balls smashing 11 fours and good support from…
