WITH artificial intelligence (AI) now able to show pretty much anyone doing and saying anything, what does this mean for our elections? How will people be able to tell fact from fiction. The Australian and Victorian Electoral Commissions were contacted to find out how they are tackling the issue.

AUSTRALIAN ELECTORIAL COMMISSION

THE inquiry into the 2025 federal election, run by the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters (JSCEM), has been open since September 3. The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) made their submission, and their executives provided evidence at the hearing on October 15.
There were several points made which people in the shire may find interesting.

Spam mobile phone messages
People will be pleased to note that following 150 complaints from voters about unsolicited spam messages on their mobile phones, the AEC suggested that, “To strengthen public trust in political communication, the Spam Act 2003 (Cth) could be amended to ban political parties and other political participants from sending ‘spam messages’ (should such an amendment not offend the implied freedom of political communication) or..

Artificial intelligence
The AEC also commented, “Voters also need to be prepared for continuous changes in the online environment, including the continued evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that will further degrade and complicate the information environment around elections.

VICTORIAN ELECTORAL COMMISSION

The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) said there are no laws in Victoria that regulate truth in political advertising, or the use of AI generated or modified materials in political advertising.
