KINGLAKE’S own local legend Kirk Mercuri is once again proving that the way he sees the world is one of his greatest strengths.
The passionate volunteer has just released his first book, Step By Step: Living with Autism, an honest, insightful look at life on the autism spectrum, the challenges he works through, and the simple joys that give him purpose.
It’s yet another achievement for the 24 year old and a powerful reminder that disability should never stand in the way of pursuing your goals.
As part of International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), Intereach is celebrating Kirk and the contributions people with disability make to their communities every day.
“Everyone deserves the chance to strive to achieve the very best that their ability allows,” Kirk said.
“People do better when they are accepted, supported, and encouraged.”
Kirk’s five-year writing journey culminated in a community book launch on Sunday, November 30, which was a fitting tribute to the town that has supported him from the start.
Dozens of Kinglake residents turned out to cheer him on, including local author and publisher Kath Stewart.
“I was a little bit nervous but also super excited,” Kirk said.
“I’m really happy with how the book turned out. It gives people the chance to learn more about me, who I am, and what life is like living with autism.”
