NARBETHONG athlete Lachlan Nicholls has recently been selected to represent Australia as a Uniroo at the FISU Modern Pentathlon University world championships, being held in August in Kaunas Lithuania.

Modern Pentathlon is an exciting multi sport consisting of epee fencing, swimming, showjumping, running and shooting. The world championships are featuring an exciting new format of laser run and obstacle.

Lachlan explained how this passion for the sport developed for him. “It all first started around six years ago when I started training for the sport.

I went to a competition called an equathon which is running, swimming, and horse show jumping and they had a shooting range set up there so I had a try at it and I really enjoyed it so I decided to start the next competition which is a tetrathlon.

This is running, swimming, horse riding and shooting then I went on a camp for pentathlon five years ago and I have been doing it ever since.”

Lachlan is no stranger to travel as he has just recently returned from the Laser Run World Championships in China where he finished 16th individually and ninth in the mixed relay.

Laser run is completing five laps by 600 metres and after each lap is complete you shoot with a laser pistol.

Lachlan said “Sometimes it can be quite hard when you’re breathing quite heavily.”

Lachlan also explained some challenges with the sport, “The weather is different in the many countries I have travelled, I have been to China twice and it was really hot, most times I was struggling to….
