BOM trying to weather the website storm

THE Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has been facing a barrage of criticism following the release of its new website, with people taking to social media to express their opinion as well as via the bureau’s website.

If you really hate the new website, you can still access the old one if you go to reg.bom.gov.au (instead of bom.gov.au).

Keen-eyed viewers may also have noticed that the About section refers to ‘The Bureau’, the term which they tried to implement back in 2022 to widespread criticism.

Following the backlash, Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt released a statement on October 28. It stated, “Today I requested a meeting with the Bureau of Meteorology Acting CEO, Mr Peter Stone, to discuss the public’s concerns with its updated website.

“It’s clear that the new BOM website is not meeting many users’ expectations, with a significant range of feedback provided to the Bureau in recent days.

“In the meeting, I made clear my expectations that the BOM needed to consider this feedback and, where appropriate, adjust the website’s settings as soon as possible. This includes urgent consideration of improvements to the website’s functionality and useability.
