BUSHFIRE detection camera are currently in use in some parts of Australia and may eventually displace fire spotters in fire towers.

The ABC recently reported on panoramic AI cameras being used by forestry company SFM in southern Australia to protect their forest assets.

The cameras detect smoke and send alerts.

The system used by SFM was developed by Pano AI, which trained the camera using millions of landscape images.

The alerts sent by the camera includes a link which can be clicked by the receiver to see the live image, and emergency services can then be alerted to respond.

Optical zoom is also available, allowing potential vehicle identification in the case of an arson attack.

The South Australian Government is also using the cameras at fire towers near Mount Gambier, and at the Delburn wind farm in Gippsland, Victoria.

AI fire detection cameras are likely to become more commonplace in Australia in the near future.

The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action was asked whether they are currently looking into the use of AI fire detection cameras, whether fire towers will continue being staffed in addition to the cameras, and about camera accuracy.
