THIS year, fire ants are being discovered in higher numbers than usual. In January 2024, Australia Post in Tasmania found a red imported fire ant in plant material imported from the Australian mainland. It was the fourth discovery of a fire ant in Australia beyond the Queensland border.

In February 2023, a queen red imported fire ant was discovered on a freight pallet from Queensland.

There are concerns that further outbreaks of the venomous ants would lead to a spike in hospitalisations and deaths.

Red imported fire ants have infested south east Queensland since they were first detected in 2001. They were detected in Ballina in January 2024 and six nests were found at Murwillumbah in November 2023….
