SOME members of the Jameson family were reunited last Sunday at the family home in Oliver Street, Yea, for their ninth annual Jameson cousin’s reunion.

The family have a long and proud history that includes much association with the Yea township, with the reunion for the descendants of Michael Jameson, the fifth son of Hugh Jameson.

Alma Smith, who grew up in the house in Oliver Street and moved back into it when her parents passed, was a big part of the reunion.

She is a well-known face around the Yea township, with herself, her siblings, and parents Michael and Alma Jameson being part of local sport, the church, and various other community endeavours in Yea.

In the book of their family history, The Jameson family in Australia: An Irish heritage, written by Barry William Norton, great grandson of Hugh Jameson, the full genealogical history of the family is traced.

“The Jameson family grew up in Yea in country Victoria, and while many later came to the city for work, they all still have a fond and firm attachment to their country beginnings,” the book says.

The history of the family began with Hugh Jameson migrating to Australia from Ireland during the gold rush of the 1850s. He spent some time moving around NSW and Victoria, before moving to Beechworth in 1875.
