THE first Maysville BookNest Writing Competition will be held from September 26 to November 22 with a chance for writers and poets throughout the Murrindindi Shire to win great prizes.

Entry is free and open to those who have a residence, live, work or study in the Murrindindi Shire. The theme is open. It’s up to the authors to consider topics such as what matters to them, what they would like to matter to others, and what emotions and connections they want to create and inspire in others.

The competition is made up of four short story categories and one poetry category. It begins at 9am on Monday, September 26 and closes at 11.59pm on Friday, November 11.

The open age category has a 3000 word limit. The first prize is $500 and a second prize is $250.

The young writer senior category for those up to 18 years of age has a word limit of 1300. The first prize is $300 and second prize is $150.

The young writer middle category for those up to 15 years of age has a word limit of 1000 words. The first prize is $200 and a second prize is $100.

The primary school junior fiction short story category has a word limit of 500 words. The first prize is $100 and second prize $50.

The open age poetry category has a word limit of 400. The first prize is $500 and the second prize $250.

The Marysville BookNest is a small group of people who are committed to promoting local writing and reading with people of all ages, running a second-hand, not-for-profit bookshop in Marysville.

They are very excited to be launching this competition for the community and hope it gives local writers plenty of time to create, write and submit.
