TWO occupational therapy students from Australian Catholic University, Jade and Tully, have recently completed their clinical placement at Yea United Early Learning Centre.
Their placement was part of the Yea and District Memorial Hospital’s (YDMH) Innovative Model of Care Project, which aims to enhance the delivery of allied health services in early childhood settings.
During their time at the centre, Jade and Tully designed and implemented a sensory space to support children’s self-regulation, engagement, and overall wellbeing.
They describe the space in the following way:
“We created this sensory space as a dedicated area for children to visit throughout the day to help regulate their sensory systems. By supporting their individual needs in this way, the space enables children to engage more actively in their learning and participate more fully in kindergarten life,” they said.
“The design of the space was informed by extensive research, including both formal assessments and close observation and interaction with the children.
With the invaluable support of our clinical supervisor, Siobhan from Dindi Kids in Alexandra, we were able to develop an intentional, purpose-built environment tailored to their needs.
“Working within a limited budget, we focused on creating as many elements as possible ourselves and purchased only what was necessary.
