IN the final round of the home and away season Thornton/Eildon played host to Wandin.
The day was to be a special one where the club would host golden ticket round. The game celebrated players and an inspiring person that has impacted their football journey.
It was also a day to thank supporters and sponsors for their contribution to the Thornton/Eildon Football Club.
The fog cleared and the sun bathed the ground just in time for the 12.30pm start.
Captain Rose Kealy won the toss, choosing to kick to the Taggerty end of the ground and gave Thornton/Eildon’s midfield first use of the footy through her dominant ruck performance. Midfielders Tahnee Heard, Jamee Cousens and Jade Mewburn battled hard early, but second place Wandin scored the only major for the quarter taking a six-point lead into quarter time.
Wandin turned up the heat in the second quarter showing dominance around the ground placing Thornton/Eildon’s backline under enormous pressure. Bechet Cousens continued her good form as did Mia Supple.
The return of Amber Saric-Skeewes bolstered the backline but it wasn’t enough to put a pause on Wandin’s goal scoring with the visiting team kicking four goals for the quarter.
Early injuries to Amy Campbell and Leah Battalis in the third quarter had the coaches scurrying to find replacement in the backline. Emma Whitehead and Lilah Weaver-Galbraith worked tirelessly to support their teammates. Up forward Jevitha Jeeva Kumar, Yani Cousens, Lucy McRae and Kristy Pearce kept their feet, and their determination saw the ball in the hands of Siobhan Bell who kicked her first goal for the season.
It was Wandin however who continued to extend their lead scoring another…
