Thornton Eildon 5.7-37 defeated Officer 2.4-16

AFTER almost a month off, Thornton/Eildon women’s football club headed to Officer for round four of Outer Eastern Women’s football. Before the bounce excitement was growing among the visiting team with the inclusion of champs Mia and Sienna Heard. The twins have been a part of Thornton/Eildon football club family for many years and after a long wait were now eligible to pull on the blue and white stripes.

The first quarter was tighter than expected with Officer matching the visitors with their physicality and skill. Thornton/Eildon’s Jade Mewburn kicked truly to open the away teams account but that was the only major Thornton/Eildon could muster and at quarter time scores were level.

In the second quarter Thornton/Eildon put the foot down a little and outscored their opponents by two goals to give them a comfortable lead at half time. Trinity Tebbutt and Lucy McCrae opened their account with a goal each as the defence held strong to return any of Officers forward entries.

The start of the third quarter saw an ankle injury to Thornton/Eildon’s clearance queen Tahnee Heard, and Xahlia Stevenson, who was taken to hospital for scans on her right arm which later revealed a fracture which will sadly keep her out for at least a month. With the vacancy in the midfield, Izzy Weston rose to the challenge in her first game returning from injury and racked up possessions as though she had no opponents.

Imogen Paine at half back lifted her work rate and like a switch had been flicked Thornton/Eildon began to dominate the contest while limiting Officers scoring opportunities to nil.

Emma Whitehead, from full back, was creating highlights of her own with her running bounces setting up a coast-to-coast goal that delighted the faithful watching from the sidelines.
