ALEXANDRA and district residents are likely to remember the planter boxes which were briefly located outside various shops on Grant Street.
The planter boxes were an initiative of Alexandra local Pamela Thompson and were created by the The Woodies (Alexandra Community Shed and the Eildon and District Woodworkers Guild) using recycled timber. Yenckens supplied the bins and plants and Bedrock also supplied goods free of charge.
With the permission of council, they began being installed on November 27, 2024, outside the local shops which were keen to host them. Each of these shops were given a watering can for the plants.
In late May, workers from Murrindindi Shire Council removed planter boxes from outside shops on Grant Street.
Council was asked to provide an update on when the planter boxes would be reinstated.
They responded, “Murrindindi Shire Council acknowledges the community interest in this matter and appreciates the contributions made by volunteers and local businesses to enhance the streetscape.
“The planter boxes were originally installed as part of a community-led initiative. However, following a safety and accessibility review, it was identified that the boxes were not covered under any current street trading permits, which raised liability concerns for council.
